Segal, George
(26 nov. 1924, Nueva York, N.Y., EE.UU.–9 jun. 2000, South Brunswick, N.J.).

Escultor estadounidense. Segal inició su carrera artística como pintor abstracto. En 1958 comenzó a crear esculturas con malla de alambre y yeso, y dos años después regresó a los moldes de yeso, a menudo empleando a miembros de su familia y amigos como modelos. Aun cuando se le vinculó con representantes del naciente movimiento pop art de fines de la década de 1950, las esculturas de Segal, que solían estar vestidas con los insípidos soportes comerciales del lenguaje pop, se diferencian de ese movimiento típicamente irónico por una angustia muda y fantasmal. Su técnica de vaciado, en la cual al modelo vivo se lo envuelve en tiras de estopilla empapada en yeso, imparte una textura tosca y un mínimo de detalles de superficie a las figuras, intensificando así el sentido de anonimato y aislamiento.
